Hyderabad is taking another step towards smarter and cleaner urban management, as the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) plans to install smart CCTV cameras and IoT-based warning systems at 2,500 identified garbage hotspots across the city.
The initiative aims to curb illegal garbage dumping, improve sanitation monitoring and enable faster waste clearance. Additionally, it forms part of the city’s efforts to strengthen its performance under Swachh Survekshan, India’s national cleanliness assessment.
Smart Cameras to Monitor Garbage Dumping
The proposed smart surveillance system will use cameras to monitor garbage hotspots and identify instances of waste dumping and suspicious activities. As a result, sanitation authorities can gain better visibility of problem areas and improve accountability.
Furthermore, the cameras will support real-time monitoring, allowing authorities to identify recurring dumping locations and take appropriate action.
Multilingual Warning Systems
Along with CCTV cameras, the system will include IoT-based public address systems that can issue warnings in Telugu, Urdu, Hindi and English.
These automated alerts aim to discourage people from dumping waste in unauthorised locations and promote better waste disposal practices. Moreover, multilingual warnings can help the system communicate more effectively with Hyderabad’s diverse population.
Central Dashboard and GIS Mapping
A centralised dashboard and GIS-based mapping system will help officials track garbage-related incidents and monitor clearance activities.
The system is expected to help officials:
- Track garbage dumping incidents
- Monitor identified garbage hotspots
- Record waste clearance activities
- Identify recurring problem areas
- Improve coordination among sanitation teams
- Strengthen accountability through digital records
Overall, this data-driven approach can help GHMC move from reactive garbage clearance towards more proactive and technology-enabled waste management.
Smart Waste Management in Hyderabad
The project will follow a phased implementation plan. According to the proposed timeline, the project targets 50% completion within five weeks and around 95% completion within eight weeks. Furthermore, the system is planned to go live by the 12th week, while GHMC targets full completion within 24 weeks.
Once the system becomes operational, authorities can also use camera footage and incident records to support enforcement and monitoring efforts against unauthorised dumping.

Garbage hotspots remain a challenge for growing cities, particularly in areas experiencing rapid residential and commercial development. However, smart surveillance can help authorities identify issues faster, improve response times and encourage responsible waste disposal.
